Schools play an integral role in instilling environmental consciousness among the youth. Although education begins at home, schools strengthen the behavior of our youth to become our partners in environmental stewardship. It is for this reason that the Youth for Environment in Schools Organization has been established to support the objectives of Republic Act 9512 or the Environmental Education and Awareness Act of 2008, which is to formally integrate environmental consciousness in the school’s curricula.
On February 22, 2016, the EMB-NCR was very fortunate to witness the conduct of an environmental awareness seminar at the Justice Cecilia Muñoz Palma High School in Quezon City. The main goal of the event was to encourage students to use recyclable bottles or tumblers for drinking as substitutes for disposable paper or plastic cups. The EMB-NCR was invited to introduce what Republic Act 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000) emphasizes, and how the behavior of community members toward waste disposal affects the surrounding environment.
