In celebration of Climate Change Consciousness Week on 21-25 November 2016, with this year’s theme, “Green School: Building Climate Resilient and Sustainable Communities,” EMB-NCR conducted an open forum at the Conference Room on November 22, 2016 at 1’oclock to 5’oclock in the afternoon with Ms. Liz C. Silva of the Climate Change Commission, DENR Central Office, as the keynote speaker of the event.
About eleven schools from the private and public elementary and high schools and eleven representatives of the different LGUs in Metro Manila attended the forum.
The event aimed to strengthen environmental education not only in schools but also with our LGU partners. It was conceptualized to create awareness and move communities towards addressing the negative impacts of Climate Change.
Through the Ecosystems-based Adaptation (EbA) presentation, the participants were presented with some scenario where they must identify whether climate adaptation or mitigation is called for.
It is through the emission of Green House Gases (GHGs) that triggered the global warming phenomenon, which ultimately has varying effects to the different sectors of our society that ultimately affects the creation of sustainable cities/municipalities.
Ms. Silva gave an update on the recently concluded COP 22 (Conference of Parties) which was held in Bab Ighli, Marrakech, Morocco from 7-18 November 2016. The Conference forged further climate actions to ensure that the COP21 Paris Agreement agreement is implemented. COP 22 successfully demonstrated to the world that the implementation of the Paris Agreement is underway and the constructive spirit of multilateral cooperation on climate change continues.
Finally the challenge was for the participants to be the channel of change in their schools and localities to achieve and ensure a climate-resilient and sustainable community.
