In harmony with this year’s theme on Environment Month which is “Beat Air Pollution,” Engr. Marivic Quides, the Chief of Ambient Monitoring Section of the Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division of EMB-NCR discussed the Sources of Air Pollution in NCR. In her presentation, Engr. Quides pointed out that 85% of air pollutants in Metro Manila come from mobile sources or transport group. Among these pollutants include Total Suspended Particles (TSP), Particulate Matter (PM10) and PM2.5, Nitrogen Oxide (NOx). Sulfur Oxide (SOx),ground ozone, among others.
Forester Arturo Calderon, the Chief of Protection Forest Management Section discussed the status of Greenspaces in Metro Manila. In his presentation, Forester Calderon quoted the study of the World Health Organization (WHO) that “a healthy urban city living requires 9.5 sq meters per capita.” With this data Metro Manila has a deficit of 80.6 hectares green spaces.
With the issue on the deficit of greenspaces in Metro Manila, one of the alternative solutions implemented by DENR-NCR is to tap the academe aside from the Local Government Units and and Non-Government Organizations. The partnership with Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) through a Joint Agreement will utilize the five (5) campuses of the university as planting site during the Arbor Day on June 25, 2019.
