NAVOTAS CITY, Philippines – Environmental Management Bureau – National Capital Region, through its Environmental Education and Information Unit (EEIU), conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Caravan to selected residents of Barangay Tanza II, Navotas City, on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
Mr. Paul John Tigno, Head of EEIU, started the event by discussing the State of the Metro Manila Environment. He emphasized the increasing number of population in NCR, which negatively affects the region’s environment and natural resources. He also mentioned the importance of green spaces that can help lessen the urban island heat effect.
Ms. Catherine Cayabyab from Ambient Water Unit lectured the RA 9275, also known as the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004, including water resources of the Philippines, ambient water quality monitoring and its parameters, classification of water bodies, and updates on the International Coastal Cleanup Day activity last September 17, 2022.
Mr. Rogelio Guaring II, Climate and Change Focal Person, discussed salient points of the the RA 8749 or the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999. He highlighted the sources of Air Pollution– natural and anthropogenic (man-made) sources. He also mentioned the harmful effects of air pollution on our health, including the number of deaths every year due to exposure to ambient air pollution connection of air pollution to ozone layer depletion.
Mr. Just Edrich Montes, Environmental Monitoring Officer of the Solid Waste Management Section, talked about RA 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. He points out the importance of integrated solid waste management plans in every city. He also mentioned the increasing volume of waste generated annually, especially during the pandemic surge, and the impacts of improper solid waste management on our health and the environment.
Participants of the said event were Barangay Tanza II officials, environmental police, President of PWD Organization, Navohomes Passa Youth Group, Samahan ng Kababaihan Tungo sa Kaunlaran, Senior Citizen Association, Samahan ng Mangingisda, Barangay Field Workers, and Estero Rangers.
The activity is in celebration of World Environmental Health Day, International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer, and National Clean Up Day, which aims to bring knowledge and engage the barangay residents in environmental protection and fulfill the gender mainstreaming strategy.
