METRO MANILA, Philippines – The Environmental Management Bureau – National Capital Region, Regional Environmental Laboratory Unit participated in the Water Pollution Proficiency Testing Study held last July 05 to August 19, 2022.

The Regional Environmental Laboratory Unit of EMB-NCR analyzed the five parameters in one week, from July 20 to 27, 2022, and obtained its outstanding performance in the Phenova’s WP0722 Water Pollution Proficiency Testing Study with a rate of 100% passing last August 26, 2022.

The following parameters were analyzed, and the evaluated results were acceptable: Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), pH, Color, and Dissolved Oxygen (DO). This activity was part of the 2022 Interlaboratory Comparison Exercises for DENR-EMB Laboratory Analysts held last July 25 to 29, 2022. All EMB Regional Environmental Laboratories participated in this proficiency testing scheme as part of the implementation of capacity-building activities for the staff of EMB laboratories.

Participation in proficiency testing activities is essential as this assesses the performance of individual laboratories for specific tests or measurements. The said activity ensures their ability to perform with the highest level of competence and quality.

In 2021, the laboratory also obtained a Laboratory of Excellence certificate awarded by the Environmental Resource Associates (ERA) for achieving 100% acceptable data in November 2021 WP ERA Proficiency Testing Round 322, which included 311 participating laboratories.

The achievement demonstrates reliability and a high standard of the EMB-NCR Laboratory in the evaluation of analyte(s) – BOD, Fecal Coliform (MPN-Multiple Tube), and Total Coliform (MPN-Multiple Tube). ERA is ISO and NELAC (National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference) – accredited and one of the providers of proficiency testing programs and certified reference materials (CRM).
