MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines – Environmental Management Bureau – National Capital Region, through the Environmental Education and Information Unit (EEIU) and collaboration with EMB-NCR Youth Desk Office, conducted an Information, Education, And Communication (IEC) Caravan and Bokashi “Mabuhay Balls” Production Training on selected youth of Mandaluyong City on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City as a part of the Youth Involvement in Environmental Protection and to fulfill the gender mainstreaming strategy.

IEC Youth Caravan was spearheaded by Mr. Paul John Tigno, OIC of Environmental Education and Information Unit (EEIU). He discussed the State of the Metro Manila Environment, followed by Ms. Catherine M. Cayabyab, EMS II of Ambient Water Unit, Environmental Enforcement and Monitoring Division (EMED), who lectured on the RA 9275 or Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004. Mr. Rogelio V. Guaring II, EMS II from Ambient Air Unit, talked about the RA 8749 or Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999, and Ms. Lolit Ilad, Environmental Monitoring Officer, Solid Waste Management Section, lectured on the RA 9003 or Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

In the afternoon program, Bokashi “Mabuhay Balls” hands-on Training was facilitated by Ms. Charmaine Gonzales, Focal Person for Youth Desk Office, and was assisted by the Asian Social Institute (ASI) provider of bokashi balls raw materials. The training is a home-based mudballs production livelihood program participated by 25 identified youths of Brgy. Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City.

The Bokashi balls made by the participants will be used in bioremediation activities on different waterbodies under the Water Quality Management Area in Metro Manila. The Bokashi balls will lessen, if not eliminate, E. Coli and the odor of the river system, including its tributaries draining to Manila Bay.
